Learning About Wikis

For those of you that don't know how these things work, this will be a crash course.

[edit] Basics

Almost every page that you see is actually editable. All you have to do is look towards the top of your screen to see the "edit" tab. You can click on it and it takes you to a page where you can change stuff on the page. Other people can change it back by the way--that's the wiki way! But you have to sign up for an account and have your email address verified on this wiki.

[edit] Editing

  • There are a couple of tricks. One of the easiest ways to start a new page is to go into an old one, edit it and add a thing with two brackets on both sides. That is the context for a "hyperlink" of sorts in a wiki. That will create a link to a new page and you can follow it to get there and start editing.

Here is a link to editing rules. It is on an external site. [1]

  • Please note that ALL changes you make are saved, but so is the previous version. If you accidentally delete something while you are editing it you can still save it and the old page can be recovered. It will save different versions of every single webpage each time it is edited. It can lead to thousands of them over time, but they are still all there.
  • Please describe any changes you make to a page in the summary field before you click save so that we can see things at a glance.
  • Note as well that you can use < br > tags to break up lines.
  • Please use the Summary field to note changes that you make to a page. If you are adding a lot of content a note about the addition should be included. Even minor formatting changes should be noted. This can help if we ever need to revert something to a previous version. We will know how far back we need to go/etc.

[edit] Logging In

There is a log in link on the very top right hand side of the page. If you click that it will take you to a screen that allows you to create a user or to log in. Do one of those two things. Then you will have to go back to the main screen. From there you can work your way around. On this wiki, you must register and provide a working email address before you can edit or create pages.
