Good things that have happened
From TruthAboutIraq
While Iraq has many problems, a number of positive results have resulted from Operation Iraqi Freedom:
- The removal of the Hussein regime, one of the most repressive and brutal governments of modern times, which was responsible for the deaths of approx. 2 million people in the course of several civil wars and attempted conquests of neighboring states
- The elimination of uncertainty about the continued presence of WMD left over from Saddam's known stockpiles, which (given the Hussein regime's unwillingness to cooperate) could not have been accomplished without invasion
- A relatively liberal and democratic constitution has been enacted via referendum with broad popular support
- Three elections judged "free and fair" by international observers have been held
- Several hundred independent media organizations have been formed
- Iraq was rated one of the most free countries in the region by the 2005 Index of Political Freedom
- Several hundred thousand Iraqis have joined security forces fighting insurgents, including Al Qaeda affiliates.
